INDONESIA (Bali)

DAY 14

We took another restful day out of the sun. Our room is constantly dirty from all the geckos that run across the rafters. They feel it is their right to leave black spit (filled with beetle wings and bug parts) wherever it may fall, including the bed... and us.

In the evening we went to a local temple ceremony. There was music, a mask dance, and then what appeared to be a comedy show. There were a couple actors on stage and everyone was dying laughing (all ages, and even the band members). We eventually left them to their fun since it was late and we weren’t understanding a word of it anyway.

DAY 15

We left most of our stuff in Ubud and rented a motorbike for 3 days.

Our first stop was Gunung Kawi, 11th century graves of kings chiseled into a cliff.

At the top of a local volcano, we visited the Batur temple with its large gold doors. We also saw a newspaper announcing the eruption of Mt Merapi, about 6 days after we climbed it); it had killed 20 people (although the death toll had climbed to 40 by the end of our trip) and left thousands homeless.

The drive down the volcano was quite nice (much cooler, with pine tree forests).

We found our hotel in Lovina just like we always did... somebody found us. But since we were on the motorbike, he had to drive up along side us on his scooter and wave a card. And so we moved into our hotel on the black sand beach.
