SEQUOIA & KINGS CANYON SUMMARY

Day 1 - We arrived at Grant Grove Village (in Kings Canyon National Park). We drove up to Panoramic Point and walked along the Park Ridge Lookout Trail until it started to rain.

Day 2 - In the morning, we walked the General Grant Tree Trail, admiring the numerous giant sequoias. The biggest trees get their own name.... Twin Sisters, Lincoln, Fallen Monarch, General Grant, Lightning Tree, Pennsylvania Tree, and many many more. We then took a long walk (ok, we got a bit lost) on the North Boundary Trail. A little later, we drove to the Big Stump Basin, where logging in the 1880s destroyed many of the big trees, leaving massive stumps.

Day 3 - Today we drove the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, making several scenic stops along the way, including an easy walk to Grizzly Falls. From the Cedar Grove visitor center, we followed the River Trail, past Roaring River Falls and circling Zumwalt Meadow (with its view of North Dome). We drove past Hume Lake to Stony Creek Village where we checked into the lodge.

Day 4 - We spent the day exploring Sequoia National Park. Our first stop was the Sherman Tree Trail through the Giant Forest. The General Sherman is the biggest tree on earth (in terms of mass). We then did the Congress Trail with its share of massive trees (such as the General Lee, McKinley Tree and Chief Sequoyah) and Circle Meadow. We took a spectacular tour of Crystal Cave, then did a scenic driving tour... Auto Log, Tunnel Log, Moro Rock... and stopped at the Giant Forest Museum. We wandered the Big Trees Trail to Round Meadow, which was filled with several browsing black bears!

Day 5 - We enjoyed a few last views on our way out of the park.
