HALONG BAY (Day 29 - part 1)

They cut all power during the night, so everything was extremely dark and very very quiet... except for Gerald's incredibly loud snoring. Since I couldn't sleep, I got up and went out on deck. I noticed that the water was filled with thousands of blinking green lights and streaks. Bioluminescent squid! Most were small but a couple were much larger. They seemed to travel in groups. The whole thing looked surreal!

The engine started up at 6 am but we never got any power again. I got dressed in the dark. It was very misty out and not many other boats were around. We were served breakfast and then the boat got underway.

Floating villages were home to the many local fisherman.

After a short while, we arrived at Cat Ba island. Some of the tourists left and new ones joined us.

We thought we were headed to the hotel, but instead we were put on a different boat and taken to another part of the island for a hike.

They parked the boat and we followed a small road which lead us to a jungle. Blasting noises (which sounded like gunshots) rang through the trees.
