ANGKOR (Day 18 - part 3)
More Bayon...
Wars on the seas
Oxen
Happier times
Wandering among the "faces"...
We returned to town and went to a hotel where we bought bus tickets. A transport bus eventually came and brought us to the bus station, stopping at several other hotels along the way.
At the station, we weren't sure where to go. A guy grabbed the tickets out of my hand and sent us to a bus. Of course, now I had no tickets to get on. But it all worked out eventually. We squished into the bus which departed at 12:30.
We made many seemingly random stops in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes people would get on or off... sometimes the driver got off... once we stopped at a well to get water for the air conditioning system. A small tv was mounted in the front of the bus that played dvds which were sporadic and jumpy. Eventually one got completely stuck so the driver changed it. We got two (partial) Thai movies and eventually some music videos.
The air conditioning ran out of water again. At 4 pm, we got a 15 minute stop to eat while the driver washed off the bus.
When we arrived in Phnom Penh, we were mobbed by hotel and tuktuk people. I sat with the luggage at the bus station while the guys looked for a hotel. They found one.... US$3 per room. It left plenty to be desired such as no hot water, no windows, no sink, the toilet had no flush on it (you had to use jet spray on the wall), it smelled atrocious, the blanket was so small it only covered part of the bed, and yellow stained walls... but there was free soap!
