TULUM (Day 5)
Again it was going to be another VERY hot day. We caught an early morning bus down to Tulum where we checked into a small hotel then shared a cab with a British couple to the ruins along the coast.
Most archaeologist believe Tulum (the Mayan word for Wall, given to it by explorers during the early 20th century; locals called it Zama or Dawn) was occupied from 1200 - 1521. The city was abandoned about 75 years after the Spanish conquest and was one of the last ancient cities to do so. Iguanas now reigned supreme.
The large complex was filled with many different temples such as El Castillo...
Templo del Dios del Viento (Temple of the Wind God)
Templo del Dios Descendente (Temple of Descending God)
El Palacio
Templo de la Pinturas (Temple of the Frescoes)
And many other interesting (some unnamed) buildings. Keep in mind, Mayans were no more than 4 feet tall.
The spectacular color of the Caribbean...
We caught a taxi back to town and enjoyed some beach time at Playa Kin-Ha until a delicious dinner at Posada Margarita, a remote restaurant overlooking the water. The weather was most enjoyable now! Eventually we got a taxi back to the hotel.
