VALLADOLID (Day 1)
We landed in Cancun and hopped on a shuttle bus to the bus station. The first class bus was full so we got tickets on the second class bus to Valladolid, about 100 miles away. It wasn't bad but was slow going. It stopped at every local bus stop and each time, vendors would board trying to sell stuff. It took us an hour just to get out of the city. But eventually we hit the highway... not that that meant too much. The bus would still randomly stop to let people off where they asked, and in the small towns, passing busses would stop next to each other so the drivers could chat a while.
Eventually we arrived in the early evening, checked into our hotel, then walked around the main plaza with its cathedral.
For dinner, we went to the Hosteria del Marques where we were able to try some traditional Mayan dishes such as papadzules (corn tortillas wrapped around boiled eggs drenched in a rich squash seed and tomato sauce) and a chaya dish (chaya is an ancient Mayan plant, also called tree spinach).
