GOZO (Day 10)

We took the bus to the far end of the island to catch the ferry to Gozo again. Upon arriving on Gozo, we learned that the busses only ran until 3 pm that day. So we haggled a fair deal on a taxi for the day. Frank, our driver, first drove us to the Parish Church of St. John in Xewkija. It was very simple but the dome was exceedingly high, almost 250 feet.

He then drove us to Dwejra Point again where we had more time to enjoy the sites. We first wandered over to a small inland sea with deep green water. Through a small tunnel in the tall cliff, we could catch a glimpse of the deep blue sea on the other side. We then walked along the coast, past the Azure Window again, admiring the many tidepools and strange rock formations along the way. After a while we reached Fungus Rock, a giant chunk of rock jutting out from the water at the mouth of a small bay. We headed slowly back and watched all the tourists race back and forth to their busses.

We drove to Victoria to visit the citadel again. We walked around the entire walled city in a mere 30 minutes. It was scary to think how crowded the place must have been when it used to house 3,000 people at night during medieval war times.

We swung by a small museum that had displays of the culture and various crafts of the island.

For lunch we drove to Marsalforn, a small fishing town with a pretty bay. A long pier led out to some views of sculpted rocks in the sea.

The cliff at Calypso Cave overlooked a lovely red sand beach. We were unable to find the actual cave though (I believe it's super hard to get to).

We swung by a windmill at Xaghra, then Frank dropped us back at Mgarr Harbor.

We weren't quite ready to go back yet so we walked around the harbor for a bit.

We then got the idea to hike to the top of the hill, where we saw the Chapel Our Lady of Lourdes, the Madonna of Lourdes, a cactus garden and a view of all three Maltese islands in a row (Gozo, Comino and Malta).

We caught the ferry back at sunset and then the local bus back to our hotel.
