ALTOS DE CHAVON

We drove out to Casa de Campo, a luxury resort. The harbor was filled with dozens and dozens of enormous yachts.

Nearby was Altos de Chavon, a re-creation of a 16th century Mediterranean village built in the 1960's, which now serves as an artist colony and tourist spot. It overlooked the Río Chavon (Chavon River).

We walked the long path down to the river and hopped in a boat for a short tour. The ride took us down the river towards the sea. The vegetation was incredibly thick and lush, and all sorts of birds inhabited the dense mangrove stands.

Where the brown river empties into the amazing blue sea is the harbor of Casa de Campo. We drifted about some luxury yachts and enormous houses for a bit, then returned to the river.

We headed upstream for a while until we reached our docking spot again. One can't continue on too much further since there is apparently a waterfall.

Then came the long steep climb back up!
