YANGSHUO (Day 14 - part 2)

Boat traffic becomes more congested as we near Yangshuo.

The cormorants are taking it easy too.

The dock

After around 3 hours, we arrived at Yangshuo where we checked into the New West Street Hotel.

For a small fee, we were allowed to take our picture with some cormorrants. This is definitely easier work for the birds than diving for fish!

Waiting for the golf carts that will bring us to the hotel

Our personal welcoming sign! The 4-star hotel was only a few minute's walk from the city's famous old street, West Street.

There is no fourth floor in this building... at least not according to these elevator buttons.

A quaint room

Between the beds was this impressive console that had buttons for just about anything, ranging from obvious thing such as Bed Light, Night (light), TV, Table (light), Mirror (light), Music, and Volume to more obscure things such as Wine, Lobby, Floor, and No Bother.

The local trashman collected debris from people's doors.

The city of Yangshuo is bordered by the Li River on one side and sits on a small plain between spectacular karst peaks. In Yangshuo County alone, there are over 20,000 hills.

Yangshou was established as a county in the year 590 during the Sui dynasty. Its many diverse ethnic minority groups, including the Hui, Zhuang and Yao, enrich it with a deep traditional culture. The streets are kept in the original style, presenting the simple atmosphere of the old town.

An overview of the city. Our hotel is located at the end of the street on the bottom of the picture.

We decided to take a short walk around the old downtown.

A walk down Pantao Road

West Street (Xi Jie) is the oldest street in town, with a history of more than 1,400 years. It attempts to retain the feel of a typical southern China street.

The street is lined with stores, ranging from traditional folk to highly international products.
