(right) Transom windows above the interior doors allowed for airflow when the doors were closed. They also allowed for light into other areas that didn't have windows, such as hallways.
The nearly 40-foot-tall square tower in the center of the inner courtyard once housed a 3,000-gallon water tank.
Exiting the castle
We started to walk the Kerrigan Nature Trail (which was only 1/4 mile) but decided it was too too wet, so we turned back partway.
Another overlook...
The Great Egret is a white wading bird that can grow over 3 feet tall with a wingspan of 4 to 5.5 feet. It has a long S-curved neck.
Stealthy!
Anhingas are also known as snakebirds, darters and water turkeys. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means "devil bird" or "snake bird", since when the bird swims, only its neck sticks above water, making it look like a snake ready to strike.
They feed on fish, amphibians, aquatic invertebrates and insects.
