DEPARTURE (Day 7 - part 2)

The old convent

Dutch Alley

A long line at Cafe du Monde! We were lucky to have already done this.

We returned to the hotel, packed and hopped on the shuttle to the airport.

Canal Street

At the airport, there was a long line to get through security. But we had arrived early so there was no stress.

Apparently this is how the attendants know where to stop the different-sized planes.

Watching the various planes come and go

The announcement was made to start boarding... the suddenly it was cancelled due to a maintenance problem. Apparently one of the jumpseats for the flight attendants was broken and going to have to be replaced. Very likely the new seat was going to have to be flown up from Texas. For a long time we were left in limbo until eventually a new departure time of 10 pm was set.

To make up for it, the airlines gave us several food vouchers so we could go get dinner. There were unfotunately very few vegetarian options and we had to do a lot of walking throughout the airport. Eventually we found a place where I could get a veggie burger and a shake. But even that had a glitch. They were out of veggie burgers... AND out of the flavor of shake I wanted. Luckily they also offered a stuffed portobello burger and they had other flavors of shakes.

The portabello mushroom was filled with cheese! Yum!

The day begins to end.

It was then announced that the flight was no longer leaving at 10 pm but around 8 am the next morning! Some people immediately booked other flights using their phones. The rest formed a long line to talk to the gate attendants. Many folks were angry and yelling, but we remained calm and nice so she set us up with a hotel voucher and even helped us select a hotel. We chose the closest one. Unfortunately so did many other foks. By the time we made our way down to the hotel shuttle stop, there was huge amount of people waiting. The small shuttle could only hold 6 or 7 people at a time, and it seemed to take a good 30 minutes per trip.

At 10:30 pm, after about an hour of waiting, Sean simply ordered an Uber. We had just checked into the hotel when another shuttleload of people arrived. We set the alarm for 4:15 am and went to sleep around 11:15 pm. I imagine there were STILL people at the airport waiting for the shuttle.

They didn't have any more rooms with two beds but luckily there was one real bed and one pull-out couch bed.
