DRIVE (Day 8)

Today was a long driving day home.

Clearly it snowed last night on the mountains.

Breakfast room ... with make-them-yourself waffles!

On the road:

In Grand Junction we stopped for lunch at a Thai restaurant. Mere moments after we sat down, a massive hail storm hit! It only lasted several minutes but it coated everything in white.

The downpour ... hailstones

Making a run for her car

My exceedingly spicy meal

Leaving the restaurant after lunch, hail was still piled high.

More rain and difficult driving weather

(right) Not sure I've ever seen a Road Heave Area sign before!

Glenwood Canyon

The Colorado River was going wild from all the torrential rain. ... Approaching the Rocky Mountains

Dillon Reservoir ... Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels

Loveland ski area ... Wow! Expensive!

Sandstone forms the Leyden Ridge hogback (basically a long narrow ridge with one steep side) ... Snd some ruins of an old mining operation

The town and ridge were named for pioneer miner brothers Michael, Martin and John Leyden who came looking for gold in 1865. Instead they started a coal mine, delivering their goods by oxen to Golden and Denver. In 1866, Michael was murdered near the mine site and in 1870 Martin died of methan gas in the mine.
