LIGHTHOUSE (Day 8)

Again rain greeted us in the morning. We made our way back up the coast, briefly stopping at a chilly beach in Miami.

Back near Daytona, we paid a short visit to the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse.Thirty historic lighthouses still line the Florida coastline, and this one is the tallest at 175 feet. It was completed in 1887 and gave us a view of the Halifax River and the sea. It was extremely windy up top!

We wandered around the complex in the cold and the rain, visiting the old dwellings from 1890 and two historic boats. In the exhibit buildings we saw a large First Order Fresnel lens and also got to lift a 40 pound kerosene can that the lighthouse keepers had to carry to the top of the lighthouse every night!
