We set out around 8 am. It would take about 6 hours to get up to Deadwood from Boulder, almost a straight shot north.
A giant bison sign stood upon a hill, indicating we were approaching the Wyoming border.
A large herd of real bison grazed the hills beneath it.
Heading into vast stretches of emptiness
Along the road were multiple spots where some kind of underground cables were being installed.
The various towns we passed through
Expansive views
A large hunting party
A herd of pronghorn ... and cattle
Multiple rows of trees and snow fences hint of rough winters.
More indications that large winter snowstorms are not uncommon here
We kept seeing pieces of pink and red highway (which we nicknamed the Salmon Highway). Apparently asphalt is often made using local rock and can take on its color.
We stopped for lunch at a travel center in Newcastle. Taco John's had a variety of tacos and burritos... and tater tots. An unusal but yummy combination!
After Newcastle, the scenery began to include more trees and mountains.
Hmmm, I wonder if this is where Salmon Highway rock comes from?
