YOSEMITE & MONO LAKE (Day 9 - part 5)

Overlooking Mono Lake from the visitor center...

Tufa ... and Paoha Island

40,000 years ago, this surrounding area was flat. A series of eruptions, some as recently as 650 years, created this small range.

We grabbed some lunch in town.

Then we set out to the South Tufa area to explore some tufa!

A closer view of the Mono Craters

During the Cold War, this area was used by the US military to test weapons along this south shoreline. In 1962, due to public safety concerns, all operations ceased.

Info signs along the way

At one point in time, in order for the tufa to form, this area would have had to be all underwarer.

Still a long way from the current waterline
