YOSEMITE (Day 7 - part 3)
We drove up to Glacier Point but unfortunately there wasn't much of a view. We wandered around in the rain for a bit anyway.
A hazy view at Washburn Overlook ... Illilouette Falls
Glacier Point
The geology hut was filled with information and illustrations.
1 & 2
1) 10 to 3 million years ago, tectonic forces uplifted the Sierra Nevada. Powerful rivers carved the landscape into V-shaped canyons.
2) 3 million to 20,000 years ago, the climate cooled and glaciers entered the valley, filling it almost to the top of Half Dome.
3) Repeated glaciation eroded the valleys and carved the dramatic cliffs and rock formations.
4) 20,000 to 10,000 years ago, the last major glacier melted and receded, turning the valley floor into a shallow lake.
This eventually filled with sediment, creating a flat valley floor.
3 & 4
The glaciers that created Yosemite Valley
It finally stopped raining during our drive back.... Glacier Point Road, Wawona Road, Big Oak Flat Road.
Wawona Tunnel ... Tunnel View overlook
El Capitan ... Tunnel #3
Hodgdon Meadows campground was to be our home for the night. We got some firewood from the store and Scott made a blaze to keep us warm.
Bears are so bold here that they will steal food (or any scented item) even if you are standing only a few feet away.
